Making a lasting difference
"I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things." 2 Peter 1:15 NIV
I don't know about you, but sometimes I just wonder if I'm making a difference. A devotion I read this morning caught my attention and I would like to share parts of it with you.
Author and Pastor J.R. Miller wrote, " The only thing that walks back from the grave with the mourners and refuses to be buried, is the character of a man."
Raising children is a hard job. No one can argue that fact. And what is the most important things we want for our children?
1. Salvation
2. Character
Yes, these should go hand in hand, but the old sinful nature creeps upon us from time to time and the character part gets flawed. Character can be built, but only slowly. Wow....that makes me stop and look around at myself. Because without character, our every intention, whether great or small, will be worthless. Character provides the opportunity for longevity in any career, any relationship, and any worthwhile goal.
With that said, I pray daily that my children will be saved and have a good character. I also pray that I will make a difference in their lives and lives of others, to show that Christ lives in me and that He is the only way!
Applying this to our life now:
With the kids in ball and their seasons turning out to be not what they expected......with winning for one and wanting to play more for the other...are perfect examples of what kind of character we choose to wear. Are we going to keep on keeping on or are we going to give up? These are life lessons they will carry with them eventually to their workplace and home. When the going gets tough....
Blessings to all,
Carrie

Confederate Memorial Day

This is a State Holiday that my workplace observes. We are a non-profit organization who helps low-income families/individuals with their utility bills, along with many other services....need more info...just email me. Anyway....I've worked at my present job (7 years now?)....you think I would have researched the why/how it came to be? You think? I had never heard of Confederate Memorial Day. We also observe Robert E. Lee, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Jefferson Davis' Birthdays, which are among the 12 holidays/year we get. I knew I loved and appreciated our founding fathers, I just didn't know how much until I began working here:)
I've got to add...'cause I know TL will appreciate this.....he makes sure that what his FIL started, he will keep his word to him and continue poking fun at me......after working at my job for a few months, I show up at work as usual, on a Monday in January, and guess what? No one is there! One holiday I should have known about...Martin Luther King's Birthday! So I get a heads up from TL every year to remind me of said holiday:) lol!!! That's what I get for telling such things on myself!
When will I ever learn?
Now...back to Confederate Memorial Day.....

Thanks be to Google, I now have an answer. Click on the above website and just read about it. Very interesting in a history class sort of way. It has put meaning to the State observed holiday. Not all government entities get this day, but here at work we want to support the state in any way we can:) Too bad hubby and kids are not off today:) Shame on me:)

As for the day off, I guess I should visit the graves of these fallen men and decorate with flowers as did Ms. Willliams, but I don't know where to find them around here. I'll pay tribute to them by dedicating this blog post to honor all the soldiers who died fighting for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.

Now, what to do with a free day?

Rats!

And I mean rodents! Those pesky, nasty, aggravating things! Last week with the kids home and doing home improvements....I'm afraid the door was gaped open one too many times. Hubby had a bright idea to catch the rat that was hanging out in our duct work. He hangs a rat trap from the vent down into the duct work. Okay, I'll agree he is a genius:)........but this just didn't pan out like he had planned.

After lunch yesterday at work, I was fixing my mouth just right for my new favorite candy bar....DARK SNICKERS.........just as I was getting it out of my new favorite bag......I noticed half of it had been eaten! My first reaction was..."those boys...I'm going to get them"! But a closer look showed evidence of a RAT! I start scrambling in my new bag...and yes....it was definitely a RAT!! The give-a-way was the wire I found in my bag that used to be attached to the rat trap hanging from the vent:) lol!!!!!!!!! I know I said you can throw just about anything in the bag....but RAT was not an item I had visioned landing in there! So much for enjoying the snickers...instead I spent the rest of my lunch hour cleaning and sanitizing my bag with lysol!

Scary thought here.......what if that thing rode with me to work and jumped out while I'm traveling down the road.......Not a pretty picture there:) lol!!!!!!!!! All heck would have broke loose in that car:) lol!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to see the contraption Hubby comes up with next to rid our house of Mickey Mouse....cause ya'll if this rat got out of the booby trap Hubby constructed....it ain't no ordinary rat!

I'll post a pic when we catch him:) 'Cause I know ya'll want believe me when I tell how big he was:)

UPDATE: So much for the picture......he nabbed him this morning and already disposed of him before I could get the sleepy out of my eyes:) lol!!!!!!!!!!!! At least now I know he ain't in the car, and I can drive with my feet on the floor!

Happy Birthday Shelby!

This is my "Thankful Thursday" post. Maybe it's not the regular type of thankful lists, but I thank God for my family, and what better way to express that, than through pictures! If only we could keep that honesty, simplicity and trusting ways of a little child.....just like Jesus asked us to come to him with childlike faith!

Seven Random Things

Lisa tagged anyone that wanted to participate in this thingy about ourselves. So, seeing that I don't have much on my mind today.....lack of sleep due to an unending ballgame last night......I'll give a stab at this. Like my life isn't an open book anyways:) lol!!!!!!!!!

1. I save twist ties. Yeah, I'm one of those weird ones who keep the twist ties on bread bags, etc. You just never know when one of these might come in handy:)

2. I love antiques. I wished everything in my house was antique...besides myself:)

3. I carry a first aid kit....ALWAYS! Not just for my kids, but myself included! Things just happen ya know:) Ummm lets see......vertigo, fish hooks, sunburns, gaulded, scrapes, splinters, burns other than the sun, rashes...the list goes on and on!

4. I LOVE PEANUT BUTTER. Another item that I keep by my side. It goes good with....well just everything!!

5. I cannot keep up with my keys, cell phone, etc. One example of this was when Hubby and I lived in a weaning house behind my grandmother's convenient store. One of those old stores where the local men stopped by every morning on their way to work. Hubby is in the bed asleep...3rd shift syndrome.....I'm in my little house coat with hair all wrapped up, no make-up.....and low and behold I step out of the house to feed the dog....guess what?.... locked myself out! I had to walk barefoot to the store in all my glory and ask for a key. Yep....right past all the men and to grandmother who was laughing so hard, she was crying....me too...crying that is:) lol!!!! Wonder why I just didn't bang on the door for him.......you just don't understand.....NOTHING....except the Lord's return, can wake this man up:)

6. I have an issue with motion. See # 3 above, this is why my car is packed with first aid items. And if you are ever with me and see me flat on the floor, eyes switching every which way, throwing up...just knock me out with some benadryl...it'll save Hubby a $600 ambulance ride. If you want to see a good episode of me and Hubby and Sister C in a bathroom in the middle of the night.....just go on the next vacation with us, when me and Hubby try to sleep on an air mattress:) lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've got to stop right there......I can't breathe! I'll save more for later on that one!

7. I heart bags and shoes!

Wal-Mart special.....I think it was around $12 bucks. Love it!! You can just throw everything in it....like all necessary first aid equipment. Plus, it comes in a cool yellow, green and black too. What was a thinking not getting the yeller....since I'm in a yeller mood with the paint and new blog face. The red just jumped out at me I guess....always go with your first instinct!

That's way enough on me....now it's your turn!!

L8R,

Carrie

Spank the flies!

These pesky insects are getting the best of me. I don't know about you, but at our house these things are driving me insane......buzzing my nose and ears while I'm trying to sleep. I've resorted to taking the fly swatter to bed with me......I've bought an assortment of colored swatters and placed one in every room....just in case. My nephew M stayed with us last weekend and he got in on the action, as he put it, "M did spank the flies." That's right M, spank them flies till you heart is content! They are everywhere, in the car, on the porch, I can't get away from them.

Here's a picture of the contraption that Hubby placed outside our front door. The boys begged him to take it down before the yellow limo came to get them this morning.....Not! This thing needs a patent. One could make millions off of it! It really works! Try it! Compliments of BT for the idea. These are his instructions: large ziplock bag, aluminum foil ball, water and string! Thanks BT you are good for something besides a pain in the rear:) lol!!!! Sister C can vouch for that...she had the remedy for you too:) lol!!!!!!!

That's about all the interesting news I know!

***********************************************************************************

This is for Lisa. She scolded me for not putting a pic of my attempt at home improvement last week. Sorry, it's just that I want to add some curtains and frill it up a bit, but I'll go ahead and show you the high yeller room.

I'll show pics of the bathroom when I get the mirrors hung:)

Have a nice day!

Carrie

P.S. I need to work on the lamps....they need to swap sides of the bed.....and lose the green lamp...I'm in search for another lamp anyways:) lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! I plan to paint the side table, need a rug and curtains! Do you have any more suggestions for me? I need all the help I can get?

Almost!
Those were the words that Mom heard today. She went for a check-up in B'ham and her transplant coordinator told her that the other night she almost got "the call." They had her number except the antibodies didn't match. This is going to be some of the problem in getting a match for Mom. Not impossible and could happen at anytime, sooner or later. It seemed to really shock Mom, actually hearing the words, "you almost got a call." Wow! I started shaking when she was telling me. It really could have happened! I've played it over and over in my head, exactly what I would do. Dad has drawn us all a map of exactly which way to go, how fast to drive, etc. He is nervous...BIG TIME! He has done everything but have us do a dry run! I've got my instructions on where to meet Mom, if he can't get to her. She is to drive, now get this, herself to FP and I'm to meet her at K-Mart. The rest of the family have their respective places too! It's whom ever is with her or closest to her. Now the thing is.....can I remember.....I foresee panic mode setting in:) lol!!!!!!
Other than "almost" getting a new heart, everything else seemed to be fine!
Thanks for your love and prayers! Keep them going!
Carrie

It's a bird, no a plane, no way...... a Blimp!

Here on this mountain! Yes sir ree. I saw it with my own two eyes today. We were standing on the porch of the church congregating, talking and enjoying the beautiful day the Lord gave us, and RF noticed this "thing" in the distant horizon. Some guessed helium balloon, an advertisement on a car lot, helicopter, etc. As it finally made it's way in front of the church, we just stood in awe of a real live BLIMP hovering over our heads. Apparently DirectTV is in need of some customers! What a way to advertise.....just fly a blimp over hill billy country and see what sort of reaction you get from that. Yep, a crazy lady trying to take pictures while driving down the road of the thing. No, I wasn't driving and hubby was not cooperating either, but I managed to get this shot just beside my parents house, as we were slowing down to make a turn.

I'm sure you were not expecting that tale! It's for real people! For those of you who see these often, please overlook my giddiness, but this was a treat for us! No much excitement happens around here in the skies....guess you couldn't tell.

Changing gears here.......It's been a week here at the house. I believe in miracles, because one happened here this week. The dream of a new floor and painted bedroom and bath actually is a reality! High yeller is what Hubby calls the new flavor of paint. This yeller hue is in other parts of the house and I mistakenly showed the wrong swatch. Oops....AFTER we had painted some on the bedroom. He had previously stated about the first round of painting with this color, that blinders were needed, now in the bedroom too.......how was he to get a nights sleep in this sunny atmosphere:) lol!!!! Whatever......it's clean and that's all that matters.
Glad that's over! Home improvement is not on our top 10 best things list:)
It's sorrow and woe is me, starting back to work and the rat race tomorrow. I hear violins playing:)
***********************************************************************************
Update on prayer requests: My cousin is recovering and should be going home anytime now. Kayla is at home after a scare this week and 2 trips to the hospital. There is no tumor! However, she has mono and a problem with her pituitary gland. Keep her in your prayers.
As for Mom......she and I went to her heart "electrician" doctor this week. This doc is so special to Mom. He has been her doctor for several years and she just loves him. He was called to be a doctor. I mean, he has such a kind gentle spirit about him. He was the one who talked with sister P and I after Mom flat-lined and he went in to put a pacemaker in. He didn't think she would make it, and asked for us to call our family and friends to ask them to pray for her. He knew that prayer would be what would get her through this, because from a medical stand point, he had done all that he could. There was no logical reason why she survived such a massive heart attack. It's doctors like that, that really touch lives. He made a way for her to get to B'ham and on the transplant list. For that we will always be thankful. This visit was just a hello how are you, courtesy visit. With which I'm thankful we went. Mom needed his affirmation. And she got it! She actually told him that she was ready now and is not scared any more. Words that I've prayed and you've helped me pray to hear. He was impressed at how good the IV drip is working on her heart, while reminding her that it's a temporary fix. We had a good day!
Thank the Lord for his many blessings!
All and all it's been a good week!
Love ya,
Carrie

Urgent Prayer Requests!
I had to take time to stop and ask for your prayers. I received a call Friday afternoon from Hubby that involved my 1st cousin, (Jim T), who had a heart attack and underwent a triple by-pass surgery. He is 42 years old. From what we heard yesterday he may have had a stroke too. Please pray for him and for his family. Although I don't get to see him very often, he and I grew up together, and that is something you never forget. Pray for God's healing power to come down and touch him.
The next is a young lady, (Kayla B), at our church. My friend S called me this morning to ask me to pray for her. She has been experiencing headaches lately and was taken to the ER last night. She has been admitted and is undergoing tests for what they "think" is a tumor at the base of her brain. Please pray for her and her family. I cannot imagine what they are going through as parents and seeing your child sick or not knowing what could be wrong. I do know that with what Mom has been through, God will sustain them. He is our constant when all the world around us seems to be crashing down.
I'm asking you to pray for these two and ask your friends to pray. I know that God hears our prayers!
Love to all,
Carrie

Organization?
And I'm not talking about a social arrangement which pursues collective goals. I'm talking, get things in order around the house, organization. Which makes me want to laugh and puke at the same time. I had me a little episode last night at home, after coming home to a house that, well let me just put it this way......stunk! Sure the chicken litter that is flying everywhere, isn't helping the matter, but heavens to betsy, my house is a disaster! Not to mention my car. Seems like the high I was on from the ladies retreat in the mountains, came crashing down on me last night. After my apologies, I laid out ground rules again on just what I expect from me and all residents:) Organization being top on the list. If things are in some sort of order, that makes mommy happy, and if mommy ain't happy, ain't nobody happy:) You know the saying......yes you do:) lol!!!!!
So my goal for the upcoming Spring Break.....happy dance here.....is to ORGANIZE! I'm visualizing closets you can actually walk-in and drawers cleaned out. A girl needs to have her dreams you know. Also in my dreams are a freshly painted bedroom and bath:) Did you know that I really really really really hate to paint?
Hopefully that stinch that is in the air and house will be gone and I can restore the house to semi-order. I'm back to reality here. No frills, no fuss, just some good 'ole down time at the L house for next week. But, if the walls were to magically get painted I would be thrilled and surprised....still dreaming:) lol!!!!!!!!
All that to say this.......you might not be hearing from me for a few days! Your turn for the happy dance.....you will get a break from the crazy woman!
Until next time..........
Carrie

Worth-ship

This was the title of a devotion I read this morning. The past few Sunday's have been extra worship filled. What a blessing it is to know that we can worship, that God is looking for us to do it, and that there's no "only" way to do it. To understand worship, think: worth-ship! How much do you value the Lord?
I don't know about you, but when I value something or someone....I love to talk about it/them! So, why do we feel inhibited to talk/worship for the One who saved our souls from the pitt of Hell? He so deserves "worth-ship"! No one is more worthy than the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Come on and join me today in "worth-shipping" our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Rev 4:11 says, "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created"

Update on Mom: She is doing good! I guess that's why this devotion really touched me today. I'm serving a risen Savior who has touched Mom and is giving her the strength to go about her daily routine. As I drove down her driveway yesterday evening, my heart started pounding with sheer delight....there she was sitting in a chair blowing bubbles with her grandchildren! What a sight to see....knowing her circumstances....that at any moment her life will be changed with a phone call. When she gets that call/calls...I know God will be on the other end! For that, and many more blessings I cannot even fathom...I Praise You Lord!

Mawmaw wraps our popsicles just right!

We love Mawmaw's tree!

Have a blessed day!

And we got over it! Thanks to Lisa and her wonderful and inspiring lessons. God really showed up at this retreat! We had a great time...one filled with more laughs, cries, testimonies and singing one could stand. It was just some good 'ole girl time with the Lord. I can't express enough how much I appreciate my friend K for inviting me and my sisters to tag along with her on this weekend get-a-way, and for IB Church for hosting this event. Although they are not my home church, they made me/us feel so welcome. We are all sisters in Christ and marching on the same road together in this life. What encouragement we can draw from one another....hearing that someone else is having the same feelings, struggles, pain and life in general, as you are.

I just can't praise Him enough!

Love to all,

Carrie

Spring Has Sprung!

Aaaaaaaaachew! Excuse me......it's just something I've been doing a lot lately! Did I mention that I love Springtime:) No, really I do! Even though it brings on allergies, I love all the signs of new life! Here are just a few pics I took of my surroundings! Hope you enjoy!!

Welcome Spring!
Hubby and Athena feeding the cows! The green grass is almost blinding!

The culprit that is causing my current allergy attack:) Isn't it beautiful!

This beautiful spray of color is results of Mawmaw's green thumb!

Now, would you please pass the kleenex box!

Happy Spring To You!

Update: I'm thankful for the picnic lunch I just had with my Mom and Mawmaw. We had BK Whopper with fries! Those two are a pair......I've got pics to prove it! For Mom to be able to drive herself the 30.7 miles, or 40 minutes, to get to Mawmaw, is quite a blessing! For that....I'm thankful!

With all the prayer requests that I have posted about, how can I not......not reserve Thursday to thank the Lord for his blessings.

So, here it goes:

1. Thank you Lord for saving my soul as a young girl.

2. Thank you Lord for sending me my Hubby!

3. Thank you Lord for my wonderful boys!

4. Thank you Lord for allowing Mom to live through her heart attack and keeping her safe thus far. And for what you are going to do for her in the future.

5. Thank you Lord for my parents, grandmother, siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins. I love you all so much!

6. Thank you Lord for my friends. I love you all dearly!

7. Thank you Lord for my church and the family that I get to fellowship and worship with each Sunday.

8. Thank you Lord for providing me an opportunity to get to spend a weekend with the girls and hear your Word and feel your Holy Spirit.

9. Thank you Lord for our health.

10. Thank you Lord for the rain.

11. Thank you Lord for your beautiful creation, Earth, and all it's glory.

12. Thank you Lord for all the miracles you have performed in my life.

13. Thank you Lord for allowing me to sing praises to your name.

14. Thank you Lord for providing a roof over our heads and food on the table and shoes on our feet.

15. Thank you God for sending your precious Son to die on the cross for my sins and that He rose from the grave and is sitting at your right hand interceding for me.

I love you Lord!

Carrie

Oh yes it's ladies night!

You know the song, well you do if you are old enough:)

I'm so excited I can't hardly stand myself! My friend K and thepreacherswife, invited me and my sisters to join her to a ladies retreat this upcoming weekend! With Mom in her condition, we are very hesitant in going, but Mom insisted that she was fine and we could not put our lives on hold. Yeah right Mom, we'll just forget about you....NEVER! But she is doing rather well, so off we go!

I was fortunate enough to get to go last year and had a ball!! Not to mention all the wonderful food, fellowship and spiritual renewing! Lisa you rock as a speaker/teacher/motivator, etc! I am praying for you and know that God will speak through you to touch our hearts and souls, so we can return as better/stronger Christian wives, Mothers, sisters, friends, workers...and on and on! I still thumb through my Bible and see notes I jotted down from last years retreat.

The boys are quite excited too! House to themselves, no having to brush their teeth, clean up, and eat desserts first! I feel their excitement too! My only dread is what I'll come home to.......nightmares actually! Anyway, it will be worth whatever price I have to pay, as far as the mountain of clothes that will greet me at the back door, when I arrive home! No toss up here......clothes vs. 2 nights away? No contest:)!!!!

I read an email from Cousin M that really spoke to me this morning!

"Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain." "True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be." "The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have."

God just spoke through that to me, saying, "no matter what comes your way, I'm there, always have, always will be." "Trust me, I will see you through." With that, I can leave home, with the comfort that no matter what happens with Mom, God is in control and he will show me how to dance in the rain!

Take my hand precious Lord!

Love to all,

Carrie
